The recommended state of clay for detailed carving is leather hard clay. At this stage, the clay has partially dried and has a firm yet pliable consistency, which allows for carving and detailing without the clay shifting or collapsing. This state of clay retains enough moisture to be worked on and indented, making it ideal for achieving intricate designs and fine details.

In contrast, greenware is too wet and soft, which makes it difficult to achieve precise carvings without causing deformities. Bone dry clay, while it can hold carved designs, is too fragile and can easily crack or break during the carving process. Bisque clay, having already been fired once, is too hard and unyielding for detailed carving, making it suitable for other decorative techniques but not for carving fine details.
